Zaanstad – nieuwe industrie in oude fabrieken.

Here is a promotional video for the area where the studio is located. They want to encourage artists and designers to move out there. Vrij Glas is one of the “example companies”. Minute 7.2 shows Marc Barreda talking about Vrij Glas and shows the  studio space.

Vrij Glas, in Zaandam

This is where I am currently making artwork, and also serving as the Artist in Residence Coordinator. Vrij Glas, in Zaandam, just a short ferry ride from Amsterdam. www.vrijglas.nl

It is a huge space in an old munitions factory. This was a not-so-normal day at the studio: The Director Anna Carlgren curled up on my bench to watch while Marc and Josie made goblets and I made a burned paper piece. (Seen here in process on the floor.)

Marc and Josie are visiting from America right now, to help in the studio and make some of their own work.

On the glassblowing island of Murano, just next to Venice. Two friends and I went on a day trip from a conference, and we managed to find the tool shop of Carlo Dona, where beautifully crafted glassblowing tools are still made by hand. Here I am at one of the factories on the island. Photo credit: Erwin Verbruggen.
